Today, July 7, in the Riga Castle the State President Valdis Zatlers met with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics.
This was the first official meeting of the President with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after I. Bickovics took office. The President congratulated the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and wished success and good luck.
During the meeting the President invited I. Bickovics to discuss current issues for the Supreme Court and the Latvian judiciary in general. The officials talked about the draft law “On Judicial Power” and the possible model and activities of the Judicial Council stipulated in it. Special attention was paid by the State President to the expected reform of the Supreme Court.
Attention was also paid to separate draft laws, such as the amendments to Article 410 of the Criminal Procedure Law highlighted in mass media lately, discussing also the place and role of the Supreme Court in the creation and development of the law.
The State President was also interested in the opinion of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court regarding the issues on the procedure of appointment of the officials so that these procedures are more understandable to the public and create trust, as well as regarding the necessity and procedure of the awarding bonuses to the state highest officials.
The State President expressed the wish and readiness for such discussions with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in future, as well, to obtain information and listen to the opinion about the current issues in the Supreme Court and the court system.
The meeting of the State President and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was arranged upon the initiative of the State President. It was attended also by the advisor on the legislation matters of the State President Sandra Kukule, the advisor on legal matters Inese Lībiņa-Enger and the Head of the Amnesty Department Elena Lodockina.
