“You have taken on a huge responsibility, but I am sure you will be able to handle it,” said the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Aigars Strupiss addressing the judges of the newly created Economic Court on their first day of training on March 5.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court admitted that 25 years ago such a challenge would have been appealing to him as well, therefore he appreciates the youth and zeal, as well as the erudition he has seen in the process of selecting candidates for the position of judges. The fact that most of the judges of the newly created court have no previous experience in judge’s work makes the challenge even more serious, but the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court also sees a positive contribution in it – they enter the court system with a different life experience and fresh perspective. They will always be able to receive professional support from fellow judges in other courts, including the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, as well as the Association of Judges.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court wished the new colleagues success in making themselves professional.
Over the course of the training day, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court gave a lecture to new judges on the role and challenges of the judge in the 21st century, emphasizing the transition from formal authority to authority of individuals, from jurisprudence of concepts to jurisprudence of values. Aigars Strupiss also shared his practical work experience, which could be useful for new judges, including time planning, work organization, management of court proceedings. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court wished the new colleagues honesty, independence, dignified treatment of each participant in a case, ethics and emotional perseverance.
The new judges were also addressed by the Minister of Justice Janis Bordans, the Director of the Court Administration Andris Munda and the Head of the Latvian Judicial Training Centre Solvita Kalnina.
The training day continued with the first team building and consolidation training led by a professional team coach.
Intensive training at the Latvian Judicial Training Centre for judges of the Economic Court will take place throughout March. The Court will commence its work on March 31.
