The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics today, on April 9, participates in a ceremonial event in Vilnius, dedicated to 20th anniversary of restoration of independence of the Republic of Lithuania and 15th anniversary of restoration of the Court f Appeal and regional courts of the Republic of Lithuania. Event has been organised by the Board of Justice of Lithuania and Lithuanian Association of judges.
“History of Lithuania and Latvia is similar, so as the history of judicial system of Lithuania and Latvia. We all know price of independence well and we can evaluate significance of national legal forces in strengthening of statehood and rule of law. Our present problems are also similar, as they are related to economical breakdown. But I am sure that Lithuanian judges, just as their Latvian colleagues, do not miss call of mission – to provide not only rule of law, but also justice”, addressing Lithuanian judges, said the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics.
On March 11, 2010, Lithuania celebrated 20th anniversary from the day, when the Supreme Council of Lithuania passed the bill about restoration of state independence. So, Lithuanian court system was also restored as it existed until 1940.
Court system in Lithuania has been formed from courts of common competency and special, it is administrative courts. Regional courts, district courts, Court of Appeal of Lithuania and the Supreme Court, belong to courts of common competency. Regional administrative courts and the Supreme Administrative Court belong to special courts. Parallel to these courts there exists also the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania.
