On Thursday, August 18, marking the centenary of the institution of the State President, the Path of State Presidents will be opened in Likteņdārzs (Garden of Destiny in the town of Koknese). The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Aigars Strupišs has planted there an oak tree in memory of President Alberts Kviesis.
Alberts Kviesis was the third State President from 1930 to 1936. He was a lawyer, the creator of the judicial system of Latvia. In 1918 he was elected as the deputy of the Chair of the Latvian People's Council Jānis Čakste in legal matters, in 1919 he was appointed a member of the Courts Chamber, in 1923 – as the Chair of Courts Chamber. That is why the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court planted a tree in his memory on the Path of State Presidents.
The Path of State Presidents was created in cooperation between the Office of the State President and the Koknese Foundation.
In 2008, Guntis Ulmanis, the first President of the restored Latvia, in honour of the memory of the former Presidents of Latvia, commenced the tradition of planting trees in Likteņdārzs. He has planted trees in honour of Jānis Čakste and Kārlis Ulmanis.
In 2022, a tree in memory of Alberts Kviesis was planted by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Aigars Strupišs, a tree in memory of Pauls Kalniņš – by the of the Speaker of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece and a tree in memory of Jāzeps Rancānas – by Zbigņevs Stankevičs, the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Riga.
A tree in memory of Gustavs Zemgals will be planted in September by his great-grandson Mārtiņš Andersons.
