On February 14, the Saeima (the Parliament) confirmed Kalvis Torgans and Rudite Vidusa in the position of the Supreme Court judges without the limitation of term.
75 parliamentarians voted for the confirmation of Torgans, 0 were against, and 0 – abstained. Vidusa was confirmed with 72 votes for, 1 – against, 1 – abstained.
K. Torgans was born in 1939, he is the Doctor of Law, Professor of the Department of Civil Law of the University of Latvia, the Full Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. K. Torgans is the author of 178 scientific publications and books, co-author and scientific editor of the commentaries to the Civil Law and the Civil Procedure Law. K. Torgans has led fulfillment of several grants and programs, at the present moment he heads the implementation of the program on application and development of the Latvian private law within the framework of the European Union.
R. Vidusa was born in 1974, in 2004 she graduated from the University of Latvia, the Faculty of Law. She has worked as an assistant to the senator in the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court Senate, as a judge in the Administrative District Court and the Administrative Regional Court. Since February 1, 2007, she holds the position of the acting senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court Senate.
The Plenary Session of the Supreme Court will decide in which structural unit the newly elected judges will work. Till then, K. Torgans has to give the judge’s oath to the State President as he undertakes the duties of a judge for the first time.
