On Wednesday, February 4, Prosecutor General Armīns Meisters visited the Supreme Court for his first meeting with President of the Supreme Court Aigars Strupišs.

Both the President of the Supreme Court and the Prosecutor General agreed that there are three parties that meet in a courtroom for hearing criminal cases – a judge, a prosecutor, and an advocate, and each of these officials belonging to the judicial system is responsible for performing their specific functions. Therefore, the effectiveness of the protection of rights of individuals in court depends directly on the interaction of all three parties.

The officials discussed the improvement of criminal proceedings, emphasizing the need to remove procedural obstacles to the effectiveness of legal proceedings. The possibility of setting up a working group to formulate relevant proposals was discussed.

Maintaining professional dialogue between the courts and the prosecutor's office was also recognized as a very significant aspect.

In the context of the current geopolitical situation, officials also discussed the relevance and challenges of examining cases related to national security. To promote more effective review of such cases, they considered the possibility of the Senate giving priority to those whose examination could facilitate the resolution of multiple similar cases in lower courts.
