On January 16, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court re-elected Vēsma Kakste, Senator of the Senate’s Department of Administrative Cases as a member of the Disciplinary Court. Her term of office will begin on April 19.
Thirty-one of the senators present at the Plenary Session voted for Vēsma Kakste, one senator abstained.
The term of office of a member of the Disciplinary Court is five years. A senator may be re-elected as a member of the Disciplinary Court.
Vēsma Kakste has been a member of the Disciplinary Court since 2011.
The Disciplinary Court consists of six senators – two from the Department of Civil Cases, two from the Department of Criminal Cases, and two from the Department of Administrative Cases.
The Disciplinary Court is convened at the Supreme Court to review adherence to the rule of law of appealed decisions of the Judicial Disciplinary Committee, a negative opinion issued by the Judicial Qualification Committee in the result of evaluation of judge's professional activities, a decision of the Judicial Council on the establishment, amendment or termination of a legal relationship, and a decision of the Prosecutor General on the application of disciplinary sanctions.
