On the 3rd of November judicial Disciplinary Court is called for its first meeting.

The Disciplinary Court decided whether to accept the claim of Maris Mednis, the ex-judge of the Administrative district court for the decision (conclusion) of Judicial Qualifications Committee of January 9, 2009, about his non-direction for appointment into the post without limitation of term of office, for review. The claim was not accepted for review as it was submitted for decision made before July 13, 2011. Previously, the law didn’t provide control of the Disciplinary Court over conclusions given by the Judicial Qualifications Committee. The claim is given back to the submitter.

In the second part of the session the Disciplinary Court discussed organizational issues about recordkeeping, providing operation, etc. However, the Disciplinary Court is a structural unit of the Supreme Court, so Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, also participated in discussion.

The Disciplinary Court was formed in the Supreme Court in 2010, electing six senators in its composition – two senators were elected from each department of the Senate. Amendments to the law “On Judicial Power” of June 3, 2010, provide that the Disciplinary Court is called in the Supreme Court to evaluate rule of law of decisions made by the Judicial Disciplinary Committee.  However, amendments to the law of July 13, 2011 state that the Disciplinary Court checks also rule of law of negative conclusions given by the Judicial Qualifications Committee when evaluating professional activity of judges.

The Chair of the Disciplinary Court is Peteris Dzalbe, the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate. The composition of the court also includes senators Aldis Lavins, Marite Zagere, Anita Nusberga, Andris Gulans and Vesma Kakste.
