Dr. Cephas Lumina, independent United Nations Independent Expert on the effects of foreign debt and other related international financial obligations of States on the full enjoyment of all human rights, visited the Supreme Court on the 15th of May to ask about role and opportunities of the Supreme Court in providing human rights in time of economic breakdown and stabilisation. The expert met Veronika Krumina, the Chairwoman of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate, and Dace Mita, the senator of the same department.
UN expert was interested in cases heard in the Supreme Court in relation to observation of human rights in time of economic breakdown and while providing execution of international financial obligations, as well as in information about influence of decrease of state expenses to provision of work of the Supreme Court. Dr. Cephas Lumina also asked about cases heard in Constitutional Court related to judicial wages and procedure of review of budget applications of independent institutions.
Dr. Cephas Lumina, the United Nations Independent Expert, during his visit to Latvia between May 14 and 18, evaluates influence of external debt and global economic breakdown to observation and development of human rights in Latvia. Report on results of visit will be given in next session of United Nations Commission on Human Rights.
