For the first time, Latvian constitutional case-law is included in the Global Review of Constitutional Law, edited by constitutional law professors of the University of Texas at Austin.
The report on Latvia was prepared by a team of researchers - Jānis Pleps, a senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate, a docent at the University of Latvia, Viktorija Soņeca, a legal research counsel at the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate, a lecturer at Riga Graduate School of Law, and Kalvis Engīzers, an advisor to the Minister of Justice, a lecturer at the University of Latvia.
The review highlights the Senate’s judgment in the case No SKA-264/2023 on the Covid-19 vaccination as one of the significant Latvian judgments in the field of constitutional law.
It also provides an analysis on the confirmation of Sanita Osipova as a Supreme Court judge, as well as on the practice of administrative courts of recognizing the existence of families following a Senate judgment in relation to matters of partnership.
The report also analyses the most significant judgments of the Constitutional Court in 2023 and the legislative work of the Saeima (parliament).
The Global Review of Constitutional Law project has been in existence since 2016 and this is its eighth edition. The Review brings together reports on constitutional law developments and court cases over the past year. This is the first time that Latvia has been included in the Review.
The project is organised and implemented by professors of constitutional law at the University of Texas at Austin.
This year, the Review includes reports on 80 countries.
