This week the Supreme Court of Latvia hosts Dr. hab. Marcin Krajewski, a judge of the Supreme Court of Poland, and Dr. iur. Georg Lukasser, a judge of the Supreme Court of Austria.
Judge Marcin Krajewski has arrived in Riga within the exchange programme for judges organized by the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union, whereas Judge Georg Lukasser is in Riga as part of the exchange programme for judges organized by the Association of Councils of State and Supreme Administrative Jurisdictions of the European Union (ACA-Europe).
Today, the guests met with President of the Supreme Court, Aigars Strupišs, and with colleagues in the Senate’s Departments.
During the week, Judge Marcin Krajewski will meet with the representatives of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate, namely, with Chair of the Department, Normunds Salenieks, Senator Aldis Laviņš, and Legal research counsels Rihards Gulbis and Viktorija Soņeca. He will also meet with Senator of the Department of Administrative Cases, Jānis Pleps, and Head of the Division of Case-law and Research, Anita Zikmane. Moreover, Advisers to the Secretariat of the Judicial Council, Dace Šulmane and Rihards Veinbergs, will introduce the guest with the Latvian judicial system. A visit to the Constitutional Court is also planned.
Marcin Krajewski will also participate in a seminar for judges on the protection of intellectual property rights organised by the Latvian Patent Office, the World Intellectual Property Organisation, the European Union Intellectual Property Office and the European Patent Office. He will give a lecture on the current case-law of the Supreme Court of Poland in intellectual property law cases.
Whereas, Judge Georg Lukaser will learn about the administrative procedure in Latvia during the meetings with senators and personnel of the Senate's Department of Administrative Cases, as well as by gaining insight into the work of judges at the Administrative District Court.
The programme also includes meetings at the Constitutional Court and the Ombudsman's Office, as well as with the legislation and international law adviser to the President of Latvia, Kristine Līce, and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia, Edvīns Danovskis.
The programmes of both judges also offer a tour of the Supreme Court Museum and the historic premises of the Palace of Justice for a broader insight into the history of the Court.
