On Friday, April 21, Frank Emmert, the Law Professor at the Indiana University (USA) McKinney Law School, visited the Supreme Court as part of the program of guest lectures of foreign academics organized by the Latvian Law Institute. The professor was welcomed by Kaspars Balodis and Erlens Kalniņš, Senators of the Department of Civil Cases, Dzintra Amerika, Senator of the Department of Administrative Cases, and Jānis Geks, Legal Research Counsel of the Department of Administrative Cases.
Frank Emmert and representatives of the Court discussed the work of both a judge and a law professor, noting that in the work of a lawyer it is imperative to create a consistent link between theory and practice. Professor Emmert shared his career experience speaking about the university years, the position of a judge's assistant, the work of a judge and a law professor in the USA, Germany, Estonia. In the course of the conversation, issues related to the main topic of the professor's guest lecture (Blockchain regulation and smart contracts) were also addressed.
The professor gifted the Court his monograph on international business transactions "International Business Transactions: Text, Cases, and Materials". This is the second edition of the book. It offers an innovative combination of textbook and casebook focusing on the practice of international business transactions law. The book contains important cases, dozens of model contracts, checklists for the analysis of complex problems, and flow charts for decision-making procedures. There are updated chapters covering contracts for the international sale of goods and services under CISG, UCC, and other contract laws; letters of credit, documentary collection, and other payment arrangements; shipping; insurance contracts; and transnational litigation.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Frank Emmert visited the Supreme Court Museum and historic rooms of the Palace of Justice.
