The Saeima on May 28 took the decision to dismiss Valda Eilande and Ruta Zake from their positions of judges of the Supreme Court. The senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate Ruta Zake finishes her work in the Supreme Court as from June 1, but the senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate Valda Eilande – as from July 1. Both senators go to retire because of their own wish.
Ruta Zake has worked as a judge since 1976, for 25 years in the Supreme Court, since 1984. She was the senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate since the day this department was founded, in October 3, 1995.
Valda Eilande has worked as judge since 1989, before that she had worked in Prosecutor’s Office. In 1990 she was elected for the position of judge in the Board of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, in year 1995 she was attested to the position of the judge of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, and since year 2000 she has been the senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate.
Since year 1994 Valda Eilande was reelected for the post of member of the Central Election Committee for five times. For ten years – till February 2009 – she was the secretary of the Plenum of the Supreme Court. She is ex vice-chair of Latvian Association of Judges and chair of the Board of the Judicial Training Centre. Valda Eilande has been awarded with Sign of Acknowledgement of Judicial system of II grade and Letter of Acknowledgement of Ministry of Justice of I grade.
