On November 7, students in a Bachelor of Laws programme at Rīga Stradiņš University visited the Supreme Court, where they attended a lecture by Senator Jānis Pleps on the drafting and entry into force of the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia. The idea to organize this event specifically on November 7, the day the Constitution came into force in 1922, was proposed by Riga Stradiņš University lecturer Dita Plepa, who teaches the constitutional law course.
In his lecture, Senator Jānis Pleps highlighted the most important dates for the development path of the Constitution and reminded the audience that the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia is one of the oldest constitutions in force in Europe. He also spoke about the connection between the Constitution and the Latvian Senate, emphasizing the contribution of Latvian senators not only to the creation of the Constitution, but also to its application and the preservation of state continuity. In this regard, the 1948 statement by Latvian Senate senators issued in Germany on the continuity of the Republic of Latvia and the validity of the Constitution was mentioned as a particularly significant achievement.
After the lecture, students toured the historic Palace of Justice, learned about the history of the Senate at the Supreme Court Museum, and had a look into courtrooms.
